Ugg teach: name your good thing sharp, or tribe walk away
Long ago Ugg carve spear nobody want. This lesson fix that: first know your thing FIT the tribe, then draw the magic map of what good you make and for who.
When market PULL, you no push
Product-Market Fit (PMF) — the day pushing stop and pulling start. Marc-of-tribe-Andreessen carve the big rock words:
"In a great market — a ground full of real hungry customers — the market PULLS the product out of the startup."
Ugg explain: before fit, YOU push at tribe — chase, beg, give cheap. After fit, tribe PULL — they find you, tell friend, yell when your cave shut. PMF is when the FORCE flip direction. Ugg warn: PMF no is one number you cross — not "500 user, now fit!" You SEE the flip when cost-to-catch-customer drop and customers stop leaving.
Three shiny stones of the value-guess
Value Hypothesis (Tren Griffin) — the guess for WHY tribe use your thing. It name exactly three stone:
Features (what you build), Audience (who care), Business Model (how they pay). Ugg warn: no say "revenue target" or "launch day" — three stone only: build, who, how-pay.
The value ladder — climb up, charge more
Experience Economy (Pine and Gilmore) — five rung, low to high: Commodity → Goods → Service → Experience → Transformation. Same berry-water (coffee!) climb the ladder: raw bean on shelf = commodity (~1.50), fancy fire-lodge with your name on cup = experience (1,200). Same bean — 24,000 times price jump! Rule: caveman stuck low fight on PRICE. Caveman who climb fight on MEANING. Want escape cheap-fight? Climb.
Two-side spear (differentiation)
Differentiation Advantage — a unique thing tribe love, more than just cheap. Need TWO side. Supply Side = your special rock and skill. Demand Side = you truly KNOW what tribe want. Special rock nobody want = useless. Know-the-want but no rock to build it = other cave copy you in six sleep. Differentiation live where two side OVERLAP. Both half, or no magic.
Split the meat pie (value math)
Value is one big meat pie:
That the WHOLE PIE. Now Price cut the pie in two:
Customer Value = meat the eater keep after pay. Marketer Value = meat YOU keep. Price is the CUT-LINE, not the pie! Ugg warn big: price do NOT make the pie — price only SPLIT it. Charge less, eater keep more; charge more, YOU keep more — but only till eater meat drop below the next cave, then eater walk. And do not mix up: Customer Value (eater slice) is NOT Total Value (whole pie). Also: — more good over less cost = more value.
Price against the NEXT cave, never your own cost
Biggest pricing rock in the whole lesson: value is always measured against the Next Best Alternative.
Next Best Alternative (NBA) = best OTHER thing tribe can do instead of you. Often the NBA is "do NOTHING" — do not forget that one! Three layer: what-they-have-now → next-best-cave → YOUR thing. Up top a roof: Value Ceiling = most the tribe willing to pay. So price must sit in the band:
Above the next cave, below the roof. Ugg warn: do NOT price off your own cost or off "feel fair" — price off the NEXT CAVE. If your thing worse than next cave, you got no value to sell — just a worse spear priced like a better one. And if roof sit below the next cave, no price work at all — that tribe cannot feed this thing.
Christensen three-word test
Value Proposition (Christensen) — a thing that help tribe do a job they already try to do, but more effectively, more affordably, more conveniently. Good VP nudge ONE word. Great VP nudge ALL THREE — quick self-test for any VP.
The magic map — circle meet square
Value Proposition Canvas (VPC) — two shape that MUST lock like puzzle. Right CIRCLE = Customer Segment. Left SQUARE = Value Proposition. Six slot, fill in ORDER, tribe FIRST:
1. Customer Jobs — what tribe try get done. Three kind at once: functional (the task — "get to hunt"), social (how they look — "look strong hunter"), emotional (how they feel — "feel safe"). Ugg warn: most caveman see only functional and MISS why tribe truly buy! 2. Pains — hurt before, during, after the job. Three kind: bad outcome, obstacle, risk. 3. Gains — good tribe want. Four kind: required, expected, desired, unexpected (surprise-and-delight). 4. Products & Services — the thing you hand over. Ugg warn: this ALONE is NOT the value proposition — only one of three piece! 5. Pain Relievers — how your thing KILL each pain. 6. Gain Creators — how your thing MAKE each gain.
The TEST — the fit — is one-to-one match:
Every pain got a reliever, every gain got a creator. Pain with no reliever = hole enemy attack through. Reliever with no pain = wasted carving — just a "feature," not a value. Ugg trick: draw ARROWS pain-to-reliever, gain-to-creator. The arrows win the marks, not the two lists!
Uber — the famous map, learn by heart
Circle: Jobs (call taxi, find taxi, give directions, pay). Pains (long wait, overcharged, fight other rider, unsafe driver). Gains (arrive on time, fair price, good driver, easy pay). Square: Product (taxi phone-app). Pain Relievers (instant booking → wait; assigned driver → fight + unsafe; cost system → overcharged; no cash → unsafe + overcharged). Gain Creators (save time, pro drivers, rating system, visual map). See "no cash" fix TWO pain — one reliever can hit MANY. And know WHY each arrow hold, no just copy the boxes.
Ten marks, only two win the fight
10 Characteristics of a Great VP (Strategyzer) — no grunt all ten. Two win marks: #4 — aim at FEW jobs, pains, gains but do them EXTREMELY well (narrow beat wide). #9 — beat rival BIG on at least one thing (10× on one beat 10% on many). The whole rock in one line:
Weak VP = wide and a little better. Great VP = narrow and a LOT better. That contrast is the grunt that turn B+ into A+.
Ugg remember
- PMF = market PULLS. Force flip from you-push to tribe-pull. Not a number — a direction.
- VPC = circle (Jobs, Pains, Gains) locks into square (Products, Pain Relievers, Gain Creators). Fill tribe-side FIRST, six slot in order.
- The fit is the test: every pain a reliever, every gain a creator — draw the arrows.
- Price against the Next Best Alternative, inside band . Never off your own cost.
- Great VP = narrow + dramatic. Few jobs, done 10× better. Uber map is the one to know cold.
