Ugg teach you make tribe-machine that grow big
Sit by fire. Ugg teach you build startup — the tribe-machine made for growing big-fast. Not small hut. Not copy-cave.
Wise elder Steve Blank carve true words in stone. Learn by heart: a startup is a temporary tribe searching for a repeatable, scalable, and profitable way to feed itself. Every word heavy. Temporary — it become big-company once the search end. Searching — you do NOT know the feed-way yet; hunt for it from real footprints, no scribble-a-plan-and-pray. Repeatable, scalable, profitable — three rock-gates every feed-way must pass.
What fuel the machine — three pillars
Machine need three pillars, all together:
Innovation — new fire nobody else hold, hard for others to steal (defensible). Course say fire must be DeepTech — real new magic, not copy-website, not yet-another-Uber-for-X.
Scalability — built day-one to feed the WHOLE big-tribe without needing same-many hunters each new mouth. Fire-magic (software) scale; one shaman's two hands do not.
Uncertainty — you accept the feed-way unknown; you bend and pivot like river (Lean Startup), not stand stiff like dead tree.
Ugg carve it: . The mean "all three stand at SAME spot." Drop one, you get lesser thing: drop Scalability → small business (small hut). Drop Innovation → clone (copy-cave, like Ola copy Uber). Drop Uncertainty-stomach → corporation (old stiff tribe, cannot pivot).
The long walk — four phases
Whole hunt is four phases, each drop one prize:
- Phase 1 — Idea → Hypothesis. Prize: three filtered ideas + a Value Hypothesis (clear tale of WHY customer use it — who, what feature, how make shiny-stone).
- Phase 2 — Problem-Solution Fit. Prize: validated problem.
- Phase 3 — Product-Market Fit. Prize: validated feed-way (business model).
- Phase 4 — Go-To-Market. Prize: Business Model Canvas + investor pitch.
Capstone is beg the shiny-stone-givers for stones. Whole course is structured de-risking — turn foggy hunch into thing a giver bet stones on.
Two fears in the shiny-stone-giver
Every giver's heart hold two fears. FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) — dread of letting the great mammoth run past. Emotional PULL; make them say yes. FOLS (Fear Of Looking Stupid) — dread of backing a dead-end hunt and looking fool. Rational BRAKE; make them say no. Your pitch has two acts: Act I light FOMO ("you cannot miss this mammoth!"); Act II cool FOLS ("look — good band, real footprints, proof — no stupid"). Every Phase-4 tool feed one of these two acts.
Read the land before you hunt — Gartner tools
3C Framework — three signs where new hunting-ground forming. Convergence — two separate lands merge (AI + healing-hut). Connectedness — everything tied by vines (IoT, 5G). Context — tool bend to fit the person's spot (know where they stand, their mood). Ugg warn: these three NOT same thing — merge, network, adapt.
Hype Cycle — every new fire walk the same five-step path: Innovation Trigger → Peak of Inflated Expectations → Trough of Disillusionment → Slope of Enlightenment → Plateau of Productivity. Ugg warn: no fall in love with fire at the Peak! Find fire climbing OUT of the Trough. On the Slope of Enlightenment the fire truly work now, the loud copy-tribes already quit, shiny-stones cheap. That the founder sweet-spot.
Impact Radar — Gartner map of new fires by when-ripe and how-hard-hit. Balance your spears: some short hunts (ripe-now fire you ship today), some long hunts (five-winter-away fire).
Idea Hexagon — stretch ONE seed six ways
Ugg warn loud: Hexagon do NOT make ideas from nothing! It is Idea Stretching — take ONE seed idea , ask "what come neXt?", pull it six directions. Flickr seed "share photo" stretch into share-video, share-sound, share-paper.
Six stretches, each own formula:
1. Generalize — — lift idea to bigger land. "Transcribe audio" become "transcribe ANY media." 2. Fusion — — smash idea into strange other thing. Phone + Camera = the thing that ate the world. 3. Find the Nails — — you hold a hammer; what ELSE it can smash? New material → hunt all its uses. 4. Find the Hammers — — flip it. You hold a nail (the problem); find all hammers. Last-mile delivery → drones, robots, gig-hunters, lockers. 5. Add an Adjective — — stick a describing-word (often a trend). Banking → Mobile Banking → AI Banking. 6. Do the Opposite — — flip the core belief. People go to office → office come to people = remote work.
Chant them: Generalize, Fuse, Nail, Hammer, Adjective, Opposite. Workflow: — start three seeds, stretch each six ways for up to eighteen, then filter hard down to three.
The Crucible — burn away the weak
Most-carved stone-stat in whole course: 35% of startups die because no market need (CB Insights). More than one-in-three die solving a problem nobody hungry for. So filter without mercy.
Oxygen Test — first filter, one yes/no question: if this idea vanish tomorrow, would anyone struggle to breathe? If "meh, life go on" → KILL, no appeal. Cheapest filter for the biggest death-cause. Ugg warn: never skip it, and never soften it to "mild nice" — must be true gasping-without-it.
Five Filters — survivors face five rock-gates. Each is a VETO: fail ONE and whole idea die (no averaging weak with strong!). Problem Filter — problem real, painful, specific? Name who, where, when. Market Filter — big-tribe big enough? Great fix for tiny tribe = hobby, not startup (Phase 4 measure it with TAM/SAM/SOM). Solution Filter — your fix work AND much better? 10% better lose; 10× better win. Team Filter — your hunt-band hold special skill to win? Givers back the hunters first — right band survive even if the plan pivot (this cool FOLS). Business Model Filter — can you feed yourself forever, repeatable and scalable and profitable?
Ugg warn — no do this
- Call "Tinder for X" a startup — no Innovation, so it clone, not startup.
- Treat Blank's words like a chant — "searching" mean the feed-way is truly UNKNOWN.
- Make eighteen variants then never filter — Hexagon is the creative fire, Crucible is the critical rock. Need BOTH.
- Pitch only FOMO (no moat) OR only FOLS (no upside) — either way the giver walk away.
- Fill filters with mush ("market big") — specific numbers (50M households) score the marks.
- Build a product in Phase 1 — Phase 1 drop hypotheses, NOT products. Build-before-validate is the number-one death.
End of Phase 1 you have built NOTHING — no wireframe, no code — only hypotheses worth testing. That gap between idea and hypothesis is the bridge to Phase 2, where you fall in love with the PROBLEM, not the solution.
Ugg remember
- Startup = temporary tribe SEARCHING for a repeatable + scalable + profitable feed-way. — drop one and it is small business, clone, or corporation.
- Read the land first: 3C (Convergence, Connectedness, Context), Hype Cycle (hunt on the Slope, never the Peak), Impact Radar.
- Idea Hexagon = STRETCH one seed six ways (Generalize , Fuse , Nail , Hammer , Adjective , Opposite ). Funnel: 3 seeds → 18 → 3.
- The Crucible: Oxygen Test (gasp-or-die, binary) then Five Filters (Problem, Market, Solution, Team, Business Model) — each a hard VETO.
- 35% die from no market need. Phase 1 gives you hypotheses, NOT products. And a giver's heart holds two fears: FOMO pull, FOLS brake — feed both.
