Fifteen spears, but ONE trail to the mammoth
Ugg have big fear. Ugg learn fifteen hunting-tools this season. Under test-fright, Ugg think fifteen tools mean fifteen different hunts. NO. They one trail. One path, cave to mammoth, where each tool feed the next. This chapter — the four-phase pipeline — teach Ugg to stop see scattered stones and see one connected path. Carve the trail on cave wall:
Idea become guess, then problem-fit, then customer-fit, then go-to-market, then fire-story for the elders. Ugg must draw whole trail from memory. Draw it = understand it.
Walk the trail — four legs of the hunt
Phase 1 — Idea to Hypothesis. Look at the land first. Stretch one idea six ways with the Idea Hexagon — a star, six spikes, each a formula: Generalize , Fusion , Find the Nails , Find the Hammers , Add an Adjective , Do the Opposite . Then filter hard: Oxygen Test → Five Filters. Walk out with three guesses worth chasing. Nothing built yet.
Phase 2 — Problem-Solution Fit. Say the hurt clear. Dig with the 5Ws — Why is the keystone, the rock that hold up the arch. Map who care (seven tribe-roles). Then weigh the hurt:
Big hurt × happen-often × many-people = Painkiller, the hurt tribe SCREAM to fix. Check with tribe by asking about PAST doings, never lie-questions. Bias is the enemy.
Phase 3 — Customer-fit and the loop. Throw out Old Map (straight line: think → build → launch). Use New Compass (Discovery ↔ Validation → Creation → Company, with turns). Run the BML loop: Build → Measure → Learn, then Persevere or Pivot. Build small test-tool (MVP), watch tribe, learn, go round again. Track every guess on the Validation Board (up to four pivots). Find earlyvangelists — eager first-buyers at top of pyramid. Then draw the Value Proposition Canvas (VPC): a square (Products, Pain Relievers, Gain Creators — slots 4,5,6) hooking a circle (Jobs, Pains, Gains — slots 1,2,3). Each reliever match one pain. Price ABOVE next-best-thing, BELOW value-ceiling.
Phase 4 — Go to market. Put the VPC in the middle of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) — nine boxes, three zones: Back Stage (partners, activities, resources), Front Stage (segments, relations, channels), Box Office (costs, revenue). Money-in must beat money-out. Then position: STP (segment, target, position), the AHA Grid (Benefits × Price — aim for the Contenders corner: high benefit, low price), SWOT, and climb the USP Defensibility ladder to Tier 1 or Tier 2.
Four ropes tie the legs together
Test LOVE connection-questions. Learn four ropes:
Rope 1 — VPC lives INSIDE BMC. . The six VPC slots just a close-up of BMC blocks 1 and 2. Not two choices — nested, small cave inside big cave.
Rope 2 — Canvas guess, Board score, loop play. Canvas name the guesses. Validation Board mark which win or lose. BML loop the game that test each.
Rope 3 — One face, four names. The Who from 5Ws → BMC Customer Segments → STP Segment → the AHA Grid reference-customer. Same tribe-face, four legs, four names.
Rope 4 — The winning recipe. Painkiller + Contenders corner + Tier 1/2 defense = most defensible startup. Three legs, one formula.
Four cave-drawings — draw each in 60 heartbeats
Idea Hexagon, BML loop, VPC, BMC. Drill until Ugg draw each fast. Draw the picture FIRST, then write words under it. Picture earn meat even when words rushed. Two minutes buy all four.
The fire-story for the shiny-stone elders
Act I lights FOMO (fear-of-missing): huge market, real traction, big vision — "you MISS this mammoth!" Act II calms FOLS (fear-of-looking-stupid): strong team, moat, money-in-beats-money-out, named pilots — "you not lose your stones." Elder who feel only ONE act walk away. Then the Specific Ask: exact stones + what milestone it buy + how long it last + how much of the kill they get. No hand-wave.
Six tricks to win meat at the test
1. Name the tool out loud — cheapest meat. Say "using the Painkiller framework," not just "this hurt bad." 2. Draw the picture first — it score on its own. 3. Use TWO tools per question — one tool cap near 70%; two connected tools reach 100% (that the synthesis meat). 4. Quote a fire-line — one highlighted slide-word per answer, sprinkled not stacked. 5. Dodge the four mistakes (below). 6. Lost? Fall back to the four-leg trail. Ask "which leg is this?" — cut choice from fifteen to four.
Ugg warn: no do these!
- No reason ad-hoc — always name the tool.
- No mix cousins: Problem-Solution Fit ≠ Product-Market Fit. Weakness (inside) ≠ Threat (outside). Lean Canvas ≠ BMC.
- No vague filler. "Strength: we good" = no meat. Be specific.
- No ignore the question-verb. Compare need contrast. Evaluate need judgment. Apply need the tool actually TOUCH the story.
Ugg remember
- Fifteen tools = ONE pipeline: Idea → Problem-fit → Customer-fit → Go-to-market → Pitch. Draw from memory.
- Four ropes win synthesis meat: VPC⊂BMC · Canvas/Board/BML · Who→CS→Segment→AHA · Painkiller+Contenders+Tier1/2.
- Drill four cave-drawings (Hexagon, BML, VPC, BMC) to 60 heartbeats. Draw first, write after.
- Pitch = FOMO + FOLS + Specific Ask. Both acts, or elder walk.
- At test: name tool, draw picture, layer two frameworks, quote one line, watch the verb. Stuck? Ask which leg of the trail.
